Our products are

Securely Packaged

A good Lebensbaum pack looks appealing, is practical to use, should be environmentally friendly and must package the product securely. Find out more about packaging foils made of wood fibres, printing inks free of mineral oils and boxes made of carton certified to be from sustainable forest management.

Packaging material – as much as necessary

Verpackung – so viel wie nötig

Our products and raw ingredients are constantly subject to the strictest quality controls. Our packaging is there to ensure no impairment of the quality even when the finished product leaves our premises.

more

However, for reasons of environmental protection and sustainability our aim is to use as little of it as possible. Equally, product safety must not be affected: light, air, extraneous odours and moisture have to be kept away from our teas, coffees and spices.

Until they are sitting on your kitchen shelf, the responsibility for this lies with us. As we take this responsibility seriously, we always use as much packaging material as necessary. No more and no less.

Virgin fibre – why?

 Virgin fibre – why?

The packaging for our boxes of tea has been made from virgin fibre since 2006 and is completely recyclable. They have been sporting the FSC seal since 2011.

more

The packaging for our boxes of tea has been made from virgin fibre since 2006 and is completely recyclable. They have been sporting the FSC seal since 2011. We consciously opted for wooden virgin fibre. Consequently, our products should be kept from traces of mineral oil as much as possible.

The current situation is that recycled paper in Germany is heavily loaded with mineral oil due to printing practices. We need to break this cycle. That is why we also opted for vegetable oil-based inks – 100% mineral oil-free. At the same time, this is also an important contribution to the protection of finite resources.

One "plastic" is not like another

One "plastic" is not like another

We are always open for environmentally friendly alternatives. As long as they live up to our quality standards.

more

The “plastic” which envelopes every single one of our tea boxes has been cellulose-based since 2012. Within a few weeks, the film – which has been produced in a CO2-neutral way – decomposes into its natural components in the household compost.

We have not yet changed over to this for all forms of packaging; we are taking a gradual approach because, in addition to all the requirements for being environmental friendly, our packaging must be able to do one thing above all: reliably protect our product.

Our coffee, for example. It is highly hygroscopic. Meaning: Coffee attracts humidity and consequently smells. As long as we cannot find composable films that protect coffee from such influences long term, we stick to out fully recycable foil.

This also applies to some of our teas: Fruit teas with apple pieces, for example, are also hygroscopic. We cannot use our cellulose-based film for these, yet. We are, however, using them inside our bags for loose tea - on condition that the product has no interest in humidity.

We are keeping our eyes on this topic and ongoing long-term tests, as we are always checking additional opportunities to use renewable, and possibly compostable, materials for packaging.

The coffee pack valve

Roasted coffee is a sensitive foodstuff. There are as many things that can go wrong in its preparation, as there are things that need to be considered in how it is stored.

more

Even brief contact with the air sets off a process of oxidation: the oils contained in the beans react with oxygen, the coffee absorbs odours from the surroundings and it becomes rancid.

So that the coffee loses neither quality nor flavour, as soon as it has been roasted it should be quickly packed. That, however, is not without challenges: freshly roasted coffee produces what are known as roasting gases. Up to three litres per pound. This natural process can cause the protective packaging to expand and even burst.

So that our freshly roasted Lebensbaum coffees can be quickly packaged and also remain inside the pack, our bags are fitted with an aroma protection valve. This allows the roasting gases to escape, while the coffee remains protected from any outside influences.
