The taste of cloves is a sweet and peppery combination. They go just as well with stewed fruit and pastries as they do with savoury meals. Regardless of the type of dish you choose: cloves are a real delight when used sparingly.
Spicy cloves have been known in Europe since the Middle Ages. They were brought by merchant ships from exotic islands. Then, like today, the little nondescript flower buds involved a lot of work – they are harvested manually from tall, expansive trees and carefully sorted by hand.
